Overhead Cranes are indispensable machines used for lifting and transporting heavy loads across various industries.

Overhead Cranes: Essential Lifting Solutions for Indian Industries

  • July 29, 2024
  • , 4:29 pm

Overhead cranes are widely used in factories, machine shops, warehouses, assembly facilities and maintenance areas to lift and move heavy loads safely. Since these crane systems operate above the working area, they support efficient material handling without occupying valuable floor space.

Also known as bridge cranes, overhead cranes generally consist of a bridge travelling along elevated runways and a hoist that moves across the bridge. This arrangement enables vertical lifting, cross travel and long travel within a defined working area.

In India, overhead cranes are commonly used in automotive manufacturing, general engineering, machine shops, warehouses, assembly facilities and equipment maintenance operations.

What Is an Overhead Crane?

An overhead crane is an industrial lifting system designed to move materials across a defined area. The bridge spans the width of the facility while end carriages allow it to travel along the runway. A hoist mounted on a trolley lifts, lowers and moves the load across the bridge.

Depending on the load, lifting height, operating frequency and facility layout, an overhead crane may use an electric chain hoist, wire rope hoist or manual chain hoist.

Types of Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes can be classified according to their operating method and structural configuration.

Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes

An Electric Overhead Travelling crane, commonly known as an EOT crane, uses electric motors for lifting, cross travel and long travel. It can be operated using a pendant station, radio remote control or operator cabin depending on the crane configuration.

EOT cranes are suitable for applications requiring frequent lifting, controlled movement and efficient material handling.

Common applications include:

  • Manufacturing and assembly lines
  • Automotive production facilities
  • Machine shops
  • Warehouses
  • Equipment maintenance areas
  • General engineering facilities

Hand Operated Overhead Travelling Cranes

A Hand Operated Overhead Travelling crane, or HOT crane, uses manual hoisting and travelling mechanisms. Depending on the crane configuration, it may incorporate a manual chain hoist with plain or geared trolleys and manually operated end carriages.

HOT cranes are generally suitable for lighter loads and applications where lifting operations are less frequent.

They may be used in:

  • Small workshops
  • Maintenance areas
  • Storage facilities
  • Light manufacturing operations
  • Facilities with limited access to electrical power

Single-Girder Overhead Cranes

A single-girder overhead crane uses one bridge girder to support the hoist and trolley. Its compact configuration can make it suitable for moderate capacities, shorter spans and facilities where available headroom is an important consideration.

Single-girder cranes are frequently used in workshops, production facilities, warehouses and assembly areas.

Double-Girder Overhead Cranes

A double-girder overhead crane uses two parallel bridge girders. This configuration is generally considered for higher capacities, longer spans, greater lifting heights and demanding duty cycles.

The appropriate girder configuration should be selected according to the load, span, building structure and operating requirements.

Essential Overhead Crane Components

The performance of an overhead crane depends on the correct selection and integration of its components.

1. Hoist

The hoist performs the lifting and lowering of the load. Electric chain hoists, wire rope hoists and manual chain hoists may be selected according to the required capacity, lifting height, duty cycle, operating speed and crane configuration.

2. Trolley

The trolley carries the hoist and enables cross travel along the crane bridge. Plain, geared or motorized trolleys may be used depending on the required operating method.

3. End Carriages

End carriages are installed at both ends of the bridge. Their wheels and travelling mechanisms allow the complete bridge to move along the runway.

4. Crane Control Panel

A crane control panel manages lifting, cross-travel and long-travel movements. An inverter-equipped control system can provide smoother acceleration and deceleration, helping reduce sudden movements and load sway.

5. Busbar System

An enclosed busbar system supplies electrical power to moving equipment such as overhead cranes and hoists. Its compact configuration supports safe and organized power distribution along the crane runway.

6. Cable Trolleys

Cable trolleys support and guide electrical cables while allowing them to move with the hoist or crane. Correct cable management helps prevent excessive bending, tangling and interference during operation.

Applications of Overhead Cranes in Indian Industries

Automotive Manufacturing

Overhead cranes are used to move dies, components, machinery and assemblies between production areas. Controlled movement supports accurate positioning and efficient workflow.

Machine Shops

Machine shops use overhead cranes for loading components, positioning equipment and handling tools, fixtures and machine parts during production or maintenance.

General Engineering

Overhead crane systems help handle fabricated components, machinery and raw materials across manufacturing and assembly facilities.

Warehousing

Overhead cranes can move heavy materials while keeping floor-level routes relatively clear for workers and other equipment.

Equipment Maintenance

Maintenance teams use overhead cranes to remove, position and reinstall heavy components such as motors, pumps, gearboxes and machine assemblies.

How to Select an Overhead Crane System

Before selecting an overhead crane and its components, consider:

  • Maximum lifting capacity
  • Crane span
  • Required lifting height
  • Cross-travel and long-travel distances
  • Frequency of operation
  • Duty classification
  • Load dimensions
  • Available headroom
  • Indoor or outdoor conditions
  • Required lifting and travel speeds
  • Control method
  • Hoist and component compatibility

A detailed assessment of the application, load and facility structure is necessary before finalizing the crane configuration.

Conclusion

Overhead cranes provide an efficient solution for lifting and moving materials across industrial facilities. EOT and HOT cranes can be configured according to the required load capacity, span, lifting height, operating frequency and available headroom.

Kito India offers essential components for overhead crane systems, including electric chain hoists, wire rope hoists, manual chain hoists, trolleys, end carriages, crane control panels, busbar systems and cable trolleys. These components can be integrated into suitable crane configurations based on the facility and application requirements.
