Crane Duty Classification Explained: Why Usage Frequency Matters

  • September 17, 2026
  • , 4:00 pm

Two cranes may have the same rated capacity but may require completely different designs. Why? Because lifting 10 tonnes occasionally is fundamentally different from lifting 10 tonnes hundreds of times every day. This is where crane duty classification becomes important.

What Is Crane Duty Classification?

Crane duty classification is a method of categorising crane usage according to factors such as:

  • Frequency of operation
  • Load spectrum
  • Operating time
  • Number of lifting cycles
  • Average load
  • Maximum load

The exact classification system depends on the applicable standard or design methodology.

Why Maximum Capacity Isn’t Enough

A 10-tonne crane does not necessarily operate at 10 tonnes all the time. One facility might use it for occasional maintenance. Another might use it continuously to move components through a production line.

The second application places substantially different demands on the crane.

What Is Load Spectrum?

Load spectrum considers how frequently different loads are handled.

For example:

  • 80% of lifts at 20% capacity
  • 15% at 50% capacity
  • 5% at 100% capacity

This operating pattern is very different from a crane that frequently handles loads close to its maximum capacity.

Duty Classifications

M Class Typical duty level Average working
hours/day*
Minimum / reference
total working life (hours)
Typical interpretation
M1 Very light 0.5–4 h 400 h Occasional/light lifting
M2 Very light 0.5–4 h 800 h Light intermittent use
M3 Very light 0.5–4 h 1,600 h Regular but relatively light use
M4 Light–moderate 4–6 h 3,200 h Regular industrial use
M5 Moderate 4–6 h 6,300 h Regular/intermittent production use
M6 Moderate–heavy 6–9 h 25,000 h Intensive industrial use
M7 Heavy 6–9 h 35,000 h Heavy-duty production/process use
M8 Very heavy ~12 h 75,000 h Severe/continuous-duty applications

Typical Duty Classifications across Different Industries/Applications

Industry / Application Typical Crane Application Usual M Class Typical Duty
Power Plants Maintenance crane, turbine hall maintenance M1–M2 Very light / occasional
Power Plants Regular maintenance/material handling M2–M3 Light
Automotive Tooling, die/mould handling, maintenance M3–M4 Light–moderate
Automotive Press shop, assembly/production handling M4–M5 Moderate
General Manufacturing Machine shop / assembly shop M3–M4 Light–moderate
General Manufacturing Production-floor material handling M4–M5 Moderate
Warehousing Occasional material handling M2–M3 Light
Warehousing Frequent material movement M3–M4 Light–moderate
Steel Industry General steel handling M5–M6 Moderate–heavy
Steel Industry Magnet/grab cranes M6–M8 Heavy–very heavy
Foundry General foundry handling M6–M7 Heavy
Foundry Molten metal / ladle crane M7–M8 Very heavy
Cement Maintenance/material handling M3–M5 Light–moderate
Cement Continuous process handling M5–M6 Moderate–heavy
Paper Industry Maintenance / general handling M3–M4 Light–moderate
Paper Industry Production/process handling M4–M6 Moderate–heavy
Engineering / Fabrication Workshop crane M3–M5 Light–moderate
Shipyard General material handling M4–M6 Moderate–heavy
Ports / Container Handling Container cranes M6–M8 Heavy–very heavy
Scrap Yard Magnet/grab crane M6–M8 Heavy–very heavy

Why Duty Classification Matters

Duty classification influences engineering decisions involving:

  • Hoist selection
  • Motors
  • Brakes
  • Gearing
  • Structural components
  • Electrical equipment
  • Maintenance intervals

Choosing equipment without considering duty can result in under-utilised or over-specified equipment.

Light Duty vs Heavy Duty

A lower-duty crane may be appropriate for occasional maintenance work.

A higher-duty crane may be necessary for:

  • Continuous manufacturing
  • Steel production
  • Foundries
  • Heavy engineering
  • Automotive production
  • High-cycle material handling

How Should Buyers Specify Duty?

Instead of telling a crane supplier only: “We need a 10-tonne crane.”

Provide:

  • Maximum load
  • Average load
  • Lifts per hour
  • Operating hours per day
  • Travel distance
  • Lifting height
  • Number of working days
  • Environmental conditions

This provides much more useful information for engineering the crane.

Conclusion

Crane capacity tells you how much a crane can lift. Duty classification helps determine how frequently and under what operating conditions it can perform that work. Therefore, duty should be considered alongside capacity when specifying an industrial crane.
